15th Penang International Dance Sport Championship

Photo showing all the dancers from the various countries like UK, Russia, Spain, China, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, our very own Malaysia plus many other countries participating in this year’s dance sport. After the competition, all the dancers and judges were treated to a free support at the ground floor when the spectators sart to leave.

On the 22nd of November, last Saturday, I went to see 15th Penang International Dance Sport ampionship held in PISA (Penang International Sports Arena) in Relau. This time Astro came to record the dance event and we were told not to capture any dance, but I secretly taped this just like many other spectators who came with their cameras ready. As usual, the dance was spectacular with many hours of practise I am sure. They were executed perfectly or rather I could not tell a perfect one from a not so perfect dance but there were more than 20 judges who adjudicated the event. There were waltz, romantic samba, quick jive and even belly dance for the first time.

The tickets this year round was buy one get one free. The dance sport did not start at 6:30pm as scheduled due to a massive traffic jam in Penang bridge due to an accident. It only began at 7:30pm, an hour later. I was late as well, and did not have to wait too long. China seems to have caught up with international dance level as many couples from China clinched first and second places. The costumes were superb too, some very sexy but one of the couples from China who eventually got third place got their featured costumes dropping blue white feathers all over the floor. This year, they took precaution of mopping the floor every few dances so that it is not slippery from perspiration and dancers won’t fall off embarassingly, unlike last year.

I attended a charity concert entitled A Night at the Theatre on 15th November 2008 in Dewan Sri Pinang, Penang. The musical extravaganza was in collaboration with Priscilla Ballet Academy and Planet Dance Sydney from Australia. It was a night when compassion came to the fore to raise RM200,000 for 4 charities. The sold-out concert saw the talented dancers of Australian dance group Planet Dance Sydney and Penang’s very own Priscilla Ballet Academy mesmerise the audience with 19 routines based on popular musicals, among them Phantom of the Opera, Little Mermaid, Hairspray, Dream Girls, High School Musical, Moulin Rouge, Billy Elliot and Mama Mia.

Above is one of the dance routines by Planet Dance Sydney in colorful costumes. The event was a great success made possible by the kindness of Penangites. Despite the econnomic slowdown, people came forward to lend a helping hand. With a varied line up of classical ballet, tap dance and jazz numbers performed by dancers in vividly colorful costumes, the routines were a treat of sight and sound.

Despite the tender age of some of the dancers, they executed their moves flawlessly, floating across the stage in unison with each other. Each performance was heightened by clever use of colors, lighting and effects with wonderful choreography. According to Planet Dance Sydney principal and creative director Jade Dearie, the 21 dancers aged between 11 and 19 who made the trip from Sydney, were chosen from about 600 students. Some of them had performed in the United States, the United Kingdom and France previously. It was a night to behold and every audience was mesmerized by the musical extravaganza.

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa

Entertainment, YouTube 2 Comments

In the highly-anticipated sequel to ‘Madagascar,’ Alex, Marty, Melman, Gloria, King Julien, Maurice and the penguins and the chimps find themselves marooned on the distant shores of Madagascar. In the face of this obstacle, the New Yorkers have hatched a plan so crazy it just might work. With military precision, the penguins have repaired an old crashed plane–sort of. Once aloft, this unlikely crew stays airborne just long enough to make it to the wildest place of all–the vast plains of Africa, where the members of our zoo-raised crew encounter species of their own kind for the very first time. Africa seems like a great place…but is it better than their Central Park home?

Kings of Tennis – Big Bang Penang 2008?

News 8 Comments

Big Bang Penang 2008
Big Bang Penang 2008 was supposed to kick off starting today through 16th Nov 2008 featuring big tennis players like Pete Sampras, Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe plus other 5 world ranked tennnis players. Unfortunately, at the 11th hour, it was declared a non-event a day before 14th Nov 2008. The players from Europe are not coming after all as agreed payment was not made to them by Kings of Tennis who was in charge of the players and setting up of the stage. It was a big disappointment after so much excitement over a big event like this supposed to take place in Penang for the first time. Arianna Teoh, former Miss Malaysia was the organising co-chairman of this event and she played a big role to get permission from the Majlis to stage and use Esplanade for the tournament.

Kings of Tennis Big Bang Penang 2008
From the photos above, you can see that much money has been spent by the various companies to set up the seatings, installed a tennis court using Premium coating from USA, plus staging and lights for singing as well. Arianna brought in Celine Dion recently to KL and it was a success. However with Big Bang Penang by Kings of Tennis, more players and people are involved and it is not as easy as bringing in Celine Dion, one singer from USA. What was touted as Big Bang Penang has instead turned out to be Big Blow Penang as losses amount to around RM17.5 million according to the newspaper reports. And rumours have it that the organizing team Kings of Tennis is sueing someone for misinformation and false promises. And the RM200,000 rental for the use of Esplanade has not been paid. The Penang State Government even help out by waiving a 2 million ringgit deposit before setting up the staging and it turned out to be an embarassment for the public. It was such a big let down and I was hoping to get a free pass to watch this tournament.

Victory for Obama, the first Black US President Elect

Barack Obama with Oprah Winfrey

After months of non-stop campaigning in various states in USA and much money being spend on advertisements online and for air time on telly, Obama has finally made history by being the first black US president. This is unprecedented. But it is a pity that his closest relative and care-giver, his maternal grandmother did not live long enough to witness this eventful occasion. She passed away a few days ago battling cancer for some time in Hawaii. Let’s hope Obama will succeed in bringing about change that is much needed after the Bush administration and revive the beleaguered economy and create new jobs for thousands of laid off workers in USA. Obama is a skillful orator after beating Hillary Clinton to be the Democrate nominee for the US presidential election. Congratulations, Obama!

You have shown that even from minority race, America has spoken and chosen you to lead the country come 20th January 2009. We hope for better relations with US here in Malaysia under your leadership. Kenya has declared a holiday the day you won the election. This is unprecedented and history has changed. Everyone looks forward to you, Mr President, sir!

Pondering over my Life

Diana's Diary 8 Comments

This morning, my youngest sister left for Penang airport to fly to Singapore, transit in Hong Kong and then to USA for 1 week. She works for a US multinational company or MNC in Bayan Lepas. She will buy back lots of vitamins and supplements back from USA which is so much cheaper or sometimes one tenth of the price here in Malaysia. I have ordered gingko biloba, Omega-3 fatty acids, calcium and spirulina. As she left, I ponder over my life here at home. Do I want to have a family or be single throughout my life? Being single has more freedom and one is not tied down to the daily needs of kids like school work, commuting to school, tuition, and so on. But then when I am old, there won’t be anyone else to care for me other than we three sisters who are unmarried. At the moment, life fits in nicely but I hope someday, there will be someone to take care of me in my golden years. Need to pray that I can still walk unaided, brush my teeth, feed myself and bath myself on my own right up to my last day here on earth.

Web-TV Channel about Football

General No Comments

Yesterday, I was down with a heaty cough and took some medication that makes me drowsy. And when I am drowsy, I am in no mood for anything else. But work still needs to continue where I have to check incoming emails and enquiries every day. Then it was off to bed to recuperate. It was such a nice feeling to be able to rest and not think about anything else or even to worry about the financial meltdown and impending global recession and how it is going to affect my earnings. You might like to know that Carlsberg launches Web-TV channel about football and fan life. Recently Carlsberg Brewery launched a football web-TV-channel – www.partofthegame.tv. They launched 5 channels showing all aspects about football from the classic football matches to life as a fan. Be sure not to miss the video clips about football funnies and rituals from the Football Magic channel.

Since I am in the sports surfaces business, it is good to know a bit about football, futsal, tennis and other sports. This is my bread and butter for the last couple of years. I just hope that with the economic crunch emanating from US, it won’t affect my company much and that our workers will still be able to earn a daily wage with constant jobs to complete around Malaysia.
