Warren Buffett – The World’s Greatest Investor

Money, News No Comments

Warren Buffett is the richest man in the world overtaking Bill Gates sometime last year. As a teenager, Buffett was already reading company reports belonging to his father while his classmates were crazy with comics. He started business early in life and went to study finance in college. Armed with accounting business knowledge, he invested USD100,000 fifty years ago which compounded to billions today. What is interesting to note is that Warren Buffett made all his fortune from the stock market. He never earned money from selling products or offer services. And his company Berkshire Hathaway is the most expensive one is the world with USD100,000 per share. His motto is to buy low, sell high in the stock market.

That was why in March this year, Buffett invested USD8 billion of his money in the stocks when everyone else was selling due to fear, recession and panic. By now I guess Buffett would have made a handsome profit from that investment.

Despite his massive wealth, Buffett is a simple man – he lives in a three bedroom house, drives a second hand old car and flies economy. He never flaunted his wealth – instead he gave millions away to charity and to Bill Gate’s Foundation. Such an unassuming man. I guess it pays to read more about this great investor and his methods of investing to make money from the stock market. His first rule in investing is “Never Lose Money.” And his second rule is “Don’t forget rule number 1.”

Watched Pixar’s ‘Up’ (3D) movie last night

Up the 2009 movie

You can watch the trailer here by clicking on the link below:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USpI6Jzl3No

From Disney/Pixar comes Up, an adventure comedy about 78-year-old balloon salesman named Carl Fredricksen – who finally fulfills his lifelong dream of a great adventure when he ties thousands of balloons to his house and flies away to South America. But he discovers all too late that his biggest nightmare has stowed away on the trip: an overly optimistic 8-year-old Wilderness Explorer named Russell. From the Academy Award-nominated director Pete Docter (Monsters, Inc.), Disney/Pixar’s Up invites you on a hilarious journey into a lost world, with the least likely duo on Earth.

The movie was fun to watch, entertaining and funny. But due to school holidays, there was a long queue to buy the tickets at Gurney Plaza’s Golden Screen Cinemas even on a Tuesday. Wednesday is the day when you pay much less for GSC’s movie tickets to encourage people to watch. We avoided watching on Wednesday as it will be too crowded with the H1N1 flu virus spreading fast. Prevention is better than cure.

Selamat Berbuka Puasa to my Muslim friends

Diana's Diary No Comments

I would like to take this month of Ramadhan to wish all my muslim friends Selamat Berpuasa. Last year, my church sold boxes of dates for us to buy and give them as gifts to our muslim friends but it is rather quiet this year. Last year we have bought 5 boxes of dates or kurma to give them to our Malay workers but they have all left the company since February 2009. It was a blessing in disguise that all of them left when we later found out that they have done their own things outside during working hours. Anyway, that aside, my second sister will go to the airport this evening for a flight back to Suchou. She has 8 weeks of holidays in a year as a lecturer in China but she really works hard as the assistant head of the English department.

High Tech Secretary

Diana's Diary, Humor No Comments

A friend emailed this to me. There are so many emails, I have to be selective not to offend anyone. But this is so funny, and I had to share it here. So here goes:

John’s secretary

Joe: Your secretary is very sexy.

John: Thanks, it’s a robot from Japan . Her name is Sweety. If you squeeze its right breast it takes notes and if you squeeze the left it types. I’ll lend it to you for a day and you can see for yourself.

Next day Joe called from hospital and shouted :

John you BASTARD, you didn’t tell me Sweety’s pussy is a pencil sharpener.

I have also decided to remove mybloglog because some obnoxious ex-colleague is spying my blog for ideas and I just don’t like it to see her avatar on my blog. What did she do in the past to me? Well for one, she took credit for the work I did and wrote down petty offences on me like forgetting to put the pencil back in the drawer instead of doing real marketing meeting customers outside. No wonder, the company closed down after hiring someone like her. Comes to work 1 hour late every day – an even BIGGER offence that the boss does not know! And once, she even came to work in the retail shop in an upmarket shopping mall in her pajamas! My Gosh!

Have a Good Laugh!

When two Muslims meet they greet each other with one saying “Al’salamualaikum” and the reply from the other “Mua’laikumsalam”

Meaning; “Peace be upon you” and the reply “And upon you be Peace!”

The origin of Allsalamualaikum and Mualikumsalam is not Arabic, it’s Hokkien!!

Why corruption in Malaysia will never be eradicated!

Because when officials meet, they remind one another:

Official A says: “‘Wa salah Lu Mai Kong” (Al’salamualaikum)
Official B replies: “Wa Mai Kong Lu Salah”(Mual’aikumsalam)

So now we know the origin of Allsalmualaikum and Mualaikumsalam is not Arabic but Hokkien!!

Good Trip to Taiping, KL and Melaka

Diana's Diary, Food for Thought, YouTube No Comments

I came back yesterday with my 2 sisters after a road trip to Taiping’s Zoo and Night Safari which is comparable to the one in Singapore. For RM16 per person, a free ride in the tram took us round the Night Safari. It was interesting to watch the animals at night. Then I drove down to Melaka where we stayed in Baba House in town and had nonya food in the afternoon. My second sister’s friend met up with us and showed us the nice nonya food. At night, my youngest sister’s friend brought us around where we had dinner at a Portuguese Settlement where all the food are home cooked. The butter cheese crab was superb! Then we had a river ride with singing and entertainment along the way. Thereafter, we went to try coconut pudding at a Chinese restaurant which is a must try. Then we walked around Jonker Street, something like a night market for tourists and locals alike. My sister bought pineapple tarts filled to the rim with pineapple.

The next day, after breakfast my sister drove down to Impiana KLCC Hotel which is a 5 star hotel within walking distance to KLCC. In the evening, we met up with ‘Adik’, my second sister’s colleague who reports to her directly and together with his best friend Jason, we went to Starhill Gallery to have a Japanese buffet in Jogoya. Imagine the long queue even with booking on a Saturday evening. Since there is a promotion of buy one free one, we invited our friends who became our tour guides for the day.

On the fourth day, we did shopping in Marks & Spencer where the clothes range from size 10 to 20. As they were having a sale, we each bought something from the retail shop. Then with the help of a map and GPS, we drove out of KLCC to Sungai Buloh and then rested in Tapah where we bought ‘jambu air’ for the family. For dinner, we stopped in Tambun for seafood before heading back to Penang and call it a day.

Going to Ipoh, KL and Melaka with Sisters

Diana's Diary No Comments

My second sister is back from China for 1 month’s holidays. My youngest sister has taken leave on coming Friday (tomorrow) and Monday for our 5-day trip to Ipoh, KL and Melaka. We will be using my car and all expenses will be split equally. My sisters have borrowed a GPS system for RM90 to tell us where to go so that we won’t get lost for the 3 days of driving. This is better than using a map with a voice navigation of directions. We will stay in KLCC Impiana hotel with special discount from my youngest sister’s vouchers and dining for one and another free of Japanese buffet. We will also stay one night in Taiping and visit Taiping Zoo.

Nicol won CIMB Malaysia Open 2009

Diana's Diary, News No Comments

I was in KL yesterday and while waiting for a potential client who refereed the CIMB squash open, I went to watch Nicol David play with Alison Waters of UK. Nicol beat Alison (5th seeded) in 4 sets at the Curve, a big shopping mall in Mutiara Damansara. Incidentally, Nicol is my youngest sister’s god sister and her mum and my dad were both colleagues in Chung Hwa Seconday School years back. Today, Nicol’s eldest sister is getting married to a Caucasian but only close relative are invited for the Catholic church service. No one else was invited and it is a low profile wedding. It was good to watch Nicol play and picking up points against her opponent.
